A Champion Year Cut Short

Federica Brignone ended the 2024–25 campaign as the undisputed leader of women’s Alpine skiing. She won across disciplines, added World Championship medals, and claimed her second career overall World Cup title. Each race reflected her trademark power, courage, and timing, making her the skier everyone else chased.

Injury at Italian Nationals

Her momentum ended abruptly at the Italian National Championships, where she broke her leg in a crash, according to Il Corriere della Sera. Doctors confirmed the fracture requires extended recovery, casting immediate doubt on her ability to prepare for the Olympic Games.

Brignone Speaks on the Uncertainty

The 2020 and 2025 overall champion admitted she cannot yet predict her return. “Some people took two years to return from a similar injury,” Brignone told Il Corriere della Sera on Wednesday. “When will I ski and race again? I still don’t know.”

The timing only heightens the uncertainty. “The Olympics in Cortina are my dream, but right now I have to focus on healing day by day,” she said.

Brignone also explained why she entered nationals despite her established status. “It’s important to be there, to support the younger athletes and show that we are all part of the same community,” she said.

Giving Back to Skiing

Her choice to race at nationals highlighted the values that have defined her career. Brignone has always given back to the sport, setting an example for Italy’s next generation. Even as she faced disappointment, she chose to compete in an event that mattered more for others than for herself.

Olympic Dreams at Risk

The injury arrives only months before the 2026 Winter Olympics in February at Cortina d’Ampezzo, where Brignone hoped to race for gold on home snow. Doctors have not set a timeline for her return. Still, she remains determined. “All I can do is give everything I have to come back,” she said.
