Gear up for an electrifying showdown in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, as the men’s Kandahar World Cup super-G takes center stage on Saturday, January 27th.

In the last Garmisch-Partenkirchen Kandahar super-G in 2021, Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr won, followed by retired Olympic Champion Matthias Mayer and Swiss sensation Marco Odermatt. The fastest US skier was Travis Ganong, who finished 12th place, while the top Canadian was reigning World Champion James “Jack” Crawford, who finished 19th. Erik Guay was the last North American to win the Kandahar super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2010.

Marco Odermatt leads the super-G standings this season with 240 points, followed by Vincent Kriechmayr (174) and French rising star Cyprien Sarrazin (150). Despite Aamodt Kilde’s season-ending injury, Raphael Haaser (126) remains a strong contender. So far, no one has secured more than one super-G win this season, with Odermatt claiming victory in Bormio.

Sarrazin, the emerging speed skier, won the last Wengen super-G and both downhills in Kitzbühel, showcasing his remarkable form. However, Odermatt, with three podiums and a win in Bormio, stands as a formidable force in super-G skiing.

With four super-Gs left in the schedule, including the upcoming races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, athletes have ample opportunity to make their mark. However, with half of the remaining races taking place this weekend, the title picture will become much clearer after Sunday.

Jeffrey Read follows closely in 14th place (51 points), showing incredible speed in the Kitzbühel downhill. The best-ranked Stifel US Ski Team member, Jared Goldberg, holds 36 points, securing 21st place.

Olympic silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle is on an upward trajectory, turning his downhill season positive. With 22 points and a 29th ranking, a strong performance in the final four races could secure him a spot in the World Cup finals super-G in Saalbach, Austria.

Bryce Bennett, Kyle Negomir, and then the remarkable Sam Morse, scoring his career-first super-G points this season, are other Stifel US Ski Team members making their mark on the super-G points board, contributing to an exciting and competitive season.

About Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is nestled in the Bavarian Alps close to Munich, at the junction of the Loisach and Partnach valleys. This charming mountain town, formed by the union of ancient villages Garmisch and Partenkirchen in 1935, sits against the backdrop of the highest German mountain, Zugspitze. The town gained global recognition as the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics, a historic event that witnessed the introduction of alpine skiing to the Olympic Games.

The 1936 Winter Olympics, held in this Bavarian resort, marked a significant chapter in history. Chancellor Adolf Hitler opened the Games, which, though not as politically charged as the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, were influenced by the Nazi regime. The Games saw the participation of the first female athletes in a sport other than figure skating.

Amid controversies and upsets, Garmisch-Partenkirchen witnessed the end of stellar careers and moments that linger in Olympic history. Today, the town continues to support international institutions, including the George C. Marshall Center, the NATO School in Oberammergau, and the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, providing logistic and community support in the pursuit of global security and cooperation.
