Through seven races, the season has produced three different World Cup winners from two countries. Switzerland has dominated the victories through Marco Odermatt and Franjo von Allmen, while Italy’s Giovanni Franzoni claimed the Kitzbühel win.

Including the Olympic downhill, Switzerland and Italy are tied with seven total podiums each. The United States has two podium finishes, while Austria and Norway have one apiece. In total, five nations have reached the downhill podium, but Switzerland and Italy have clearly separated themselves as the discipline’s strongest forces.

Top Seven WCSL — Ordered by Bib

The World Cup Start List determines the top seeds. Below are the top seven in downhill, ordered strictly by bib number to show where the favorites attack the Kandahar.

  • Bib 6 — 🇮🇹 Florian Schieder (ITA, 1995, Atomic) — WCSL DH Rank 5
  • Bib 8 — 🇮🇹 Dominik Paris (ITA, 1989, Nordica) — WCSL DH Rank 3
  • Bib 9 — 🇺🇸 Ryan Cochran-Siegle (USA, 1992, Head) — WCSL DH Rank 7
  • Bib 10 — 🇨🇭 Marco Odermatt (SUI, 1997, Stöckli) — WCSL DH Rank 1
  • Bib 13 — 🇮🇹 Giovanni Franzoni (ITA, 2001) — WCSL DH Rank 4
  • Bib 14 — 🇦🇹 Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT, 1991, Head) — WCSL DH Rank 6
  • Bib 15 — 🇨🇭 Franjo von Allmen (SUI, 2001, Head) — WCSL DH Rank 2

The favorites are grouped tightly. There will be no waiting to see the pace.

The Contenders

As in every downhill he enters, Marco Odermatt starts as the favorite. He continues to push the limit with strength, balance, and efficiency that allow him to carry speed through terrain transitions where others lose it.

But this field is deep.

Franjo von Allmen has surged this season and proven he can win under pressure. Giovanni Franzoni has shown the same ability to capitalize when opportunity opens.

Dominik Paris remains dangerous. He has demonstrated he can turn back the clock and deliver at the highest level. On a course like Kandahar, experience and confidence at speed matter.

Austria, meanwhile, remains under pressure after a difficult stretch and a disappointing Olympic showing. Vincent Kriechmayr and the Austrian squad need a response.

Then there is Ryan Cochran-Siegle. The American has built momentum through consistent podium finishes. The question now: can he convert consistency into a victory? He has been close.

Downhill Standings Snapshot (After Bormio — 7 of 10)

  1. 🇨🇭 Marco Odermatt (SUI, 1997, Stöckli) — 755 pts
  2. 🇨🇭 Franjo von Allmen (SUI, 2001, Head) — −73
  3. 🇮🇹 Dominik Paris (ITA, 1989, Nordica) — −305
  4. 🇮🇹 Giovanni Franzoni (ITA, 2001) — −439
  5. 🇨🇭 Alexis Monney (SUI, 2000, Stöckli) — −465

With only three races remaining, no one other than Franjo von Allmen can catch Marco Odermatt in the downhill standings. The Swiss leader has built a margin that eliminates the rest of the field from the title equation.

Von Allmen remains the only athlete within striking distance, but even he faces a significant gap. Meanwhile, it is highly unlikely that anyone behind him can climb into second place.

Odermatt will finish in the top two of the discipline standings, and von Allmen is firmly positioned to join him, setting up what now looks destined to be a Swiss one-two in the downhill race.

🇺🇸 Stifel U.S. Ski Team — Men’s Downhill

Ryan Cochran-Siegle currently sits inside the top seven in the downhill standings and remains the United States’ strongest podium threat this season.

  • Bib 1 — 🇺🇸 Bryce Bennett (USA, 1992) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team
  • Bib 9 — 🇺🇸 Ryan Cochran-Siegle (USA, 1992, Head) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team — Mt. Mansfield Ski Academy / Cochran’s Ski Club
  • Bib 29 — 🇺🇸 Kyle Negomir (USA, 1998, Atomic) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team — Ski & Snowboard Club Vail
  • Bib 39 — 🇺🇸 Wiley Maple (USA, 1990, Atomic) — USA Independent
  • Bib 43 — 🇺🇸 Jared Goldberg (USA, 1991) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team
  • Bib 44 — 🇺🇸 Erik Arvidsson (USA, 1996, Head) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team / Middlebury College
  • Bib 48 — 🇺🇸 Sam Morse (USA, 1996) — Stifel U.S. Ski Team — Carrabassett Valley Academy

The American squad brings depth and experience to Kandahar, but Cochran-Siegle remains the primary podium threat.

🇨🇦 Alpine Canada — Men’s Downhill

Canada’s speed group continues to show aggression and depth, with athletes capable of pushing into the top 10 when execution aligns.

  • Bib 3 — 🇨🇦 James Crawford (CAN, 1997, HEAD)
  • Bib 16 — 🇨🇦 Cameron Alexander (CAN, 1997)
  • Bib 34 — 🇨🇦 Brodie Seger (CAN, 1995, Atomic)
  • Bib 40 — 🇨🇦 Jeffrey Read (CAN, 1997, Atomic)

Crawford and Alexander in particular have demonstrated they can challenge near the front on demanding terrain.

🇬🇧 GB Snowsport — Men’s Downhill

  • Bib 52 — 🇬🇧 Roy-Alexander Steudle (GBR, 1993, Atomic)

The Kandahar Test

The Kandahar rewards strength, timing, and clean execution at speed. Steep pitches and compressions punish hesitation. The best athletes push the limit further because they have the skill and strength to manage it.

The start list is set. The favorites are positioned. Now it comes down to execution.

Saturday’s downhill takes place on February 28th and begins at 5:15 a.m. ET / 2:15 a.m. PT. Fans in Great Britain can watch the race at 10:15
