Team Global’s Kenney, Steffey, McLaughlin Gurgl Europa Cup GS
Today, in Gurgl, Austria, the men raced the first Europa Cup of the season. The snow for the opening GS was great. Notably, Gurgl utilized a different race slope than they used two seasons ago.
Seven US and two Canadian athletes competed in the race. All seven qualified for the second run. Notably, all of the North Americans but one finished in the top 30 and scored Europa Cup points. For the Americans, this GS series will act as the qualifier for either one or two of the US’s start quota spots at the December 10th Val d’lsere World Cup GS. Today, the USA had more athletes in the top 30, 20%, than any other nation and 27% were North Americans.
USA’s George Steffey, a Team, Global athlete, skied his way onto the podium, finishing the day in 3rd place. This represents the first Europa Cup top 3 finish for the former USST athlete. Steffey finished the first run in 15th place and then produced the 5th fastest second run time to end the day 3rd overall.
