Who is racing, when and how to watch Semmering night slalom

It is a great week to be a ski racing fan – three World Cup women’s tech events in Semmering, and the first two didn’t disappoint. Mikaela Shiffrin racks up victories faster than most of us gain weight during the holidays.

The women’s field is skiing hard and competing for every hundredth of a second. Every race has been a nail-biter and has provided entertaining anecdotes to the very end.

Tomorrow’s race is a night slalom; there is nothing more entertaining than a night race. 

It is an accomplishment to win two races back-to-back in the same series. It is nearly impossible to do it three times. That is why it is likely Shiffrin will experience her 80th win in Semmering.

 The snow remains bumpy and the weather is warm, but the skiers are responding and giving it their all like the professionals they are. 

Yet how can it be that the talented Petra Vlhová has five podiums this season and no victories? It is impossible to conceive of a world without her winning her first World Cup of the 2022-23 season soon.

Wendy Holdener is tired of being second and has found a way to win the last two slaloms, and she still looks hungry. 

The Thursday, December 29th Semmering will be exciting. 

North Americans competing

This season, eight North American women have scored World Cup slalom points – five Americans and three Canadians.

After the season’s slalom leader Shiffrin, Paula Moltzan is the next best from the US.  Moltzan had a hard time getting to the finish in the first three slalom competitions but then performed well in Sestriere to finish 5th. Moltzan is due for her first slalom podium and has had two great days in Semmering coming into tomorrow’s slalom. This season has also seen Ava Sunshine and Katie Hensien score starting outside the 30. Nina O’Brien continues her comeback from her Olympic injury, and independent Lila Lapanja is back in action.

Middlebury College student Ali Nullmeyer leads the Canadians. Nullmeyer has scored well in every slalom this season and is ready to return to the top ten. Her teammates Laurence St.Germain and Amelia Smart have continued to ski well, and both start inside the 30.

Tomorrow is a night race in Semmering. The first run of the slalom will begin at 9:00 am Eastern Time and at 6:00 am on the West Coast. The second run is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm Eastern Time and 9:30 am on the West Coast
