The alpine ski racing community in Alberta and across Canada is grieving the loss of a young athlete whose passion for the sport left a deep mark on everyone around him.
In a message shared with the Alberta Alpine community, officials confirmed the passing of Emilio Hrazdira, a 15-year-old athlete from the Lake Louise Ski Club, whose dedication, talent, and love for skiing had already made him a respected member of the provincial ski racing community. Emilio died following an in-bounds avalanche in Alberta while freeskiing earlier this week.
Over the past several days, athletes, coaches, clubs, and families throughout Alberta have been processing the shock and heartbreak of the loss. In their message, Alberta Alpine described a community united in grief while also drawing strength from one another during this difficult time.
“Over the past several days, our entire alpine community has been carrying a profound sense of loss,” the statement read. “We have felt shock, grief, disbelief, and deep sorrow. At the same time, we have witnessed the strength, compassion, and unity that define our sport in Alberta.”
According to the organization, Emilio was known not only for his ability on skis but for the energy and positivity he brought to those around him. At just 15 years old, he had already distinguished himself through his remarkable talent, strong work ethic, and passion for ski racing, competing at the top of his age category and earning multiple victories.
More importantly, those who knew him say he embodied the spirit of the sport.
“Emilio lived the spirit of alpine skiing,” the statement continued. “He gave his full effort in every training session and every race. Whether in the gates or exploring the mountain freeskiing, he skied with courage, enthusiasm, and joy.”
Teammates and coaches remember him as someone whose passion was contagious — a young athlete who lifted the people around him and fully embraced the challenges and excitement of ski racing.
For many in the community, skiing was not simply something Emilio did, but a central part of who he was.
“Skiing was not simply an activity for him; it was a deep and genuine part of who he was,” the statement read.
Alberta Alpine also encouraged members of the ski community to support one another during this time, especially young athletes and coaches who may be struggling with the loss.
The organization extended its deepest condolences to Emilio’s family, his teammates, his coaches, and the entire Lake Louise Ski Club community. Though his time in the sport was far too short, the Alberta Alpine community says his spirit will remain part of the mountains and the people who shared them with him.
“Emilio will forever remain part of Alberta’s alpine community. His spirit will live on in the mountains we share and in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
At Ski Racing Media, we are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to Emilio’s family, teammates, coaches, and the entire Canadian ski racing community. Our thoughts are with everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time.
The ski racing world is a close-knit family, and today we stand together in grief while sending strength and support to all who knew and loved him.
