Academic Approach: We know middle school boys. With more than seven decades of experience in the art of educating middle school boys, we know a lot about creating an atmosphere where boys are motivated to do their best. We draw on some serious science—the latest research on adolescent brain development, learning styles, and the pedagogies that have been shown to be most effective for middle school boys. Cardigan’s curriculum prioritizes active and experiential learning: boys that are doing are boys that are learning. Our boys are always doing something, from working with their hands in the Gates Center for Invention and Innovation, the wood shop, or the digital art studio to solving complex problems through teamwork in math or science. Through our PEAKS program, we systematically and deliberately teach study and life skills, such as organization and time management. We teach our students the executive functioning skills they need to succeed at the next step in secondary school, college, and beyond.

Athletic Approach: Cardigan believes athletics and the outdoors are an essential component of teaching our students a healthy lifestyle as part of a well-rounded education. The mission of the Athletic Department is to provide all students with a unique opportunity to participate in an age-appropriate, competitive athletic program that teaches the value of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork. Cardigan provides a comprehensive, supportive environment for each student-athlete to progress at their core sport of skiing, while also promoting athletic growth through participation in our ten fall and spring athletics programs, including football, soccer, mountain biking, lacrosse, and baseball. We have a strength and conditioning coach on staff available to all Cardigan student-athletes. In 2015, Cardigan was the first junior boarding school to be recognized by the National Athletic Administrators Association with Exemplary Status for the Quality Program Award.
