Athletic Approach: Besides providing ski team members with a wide range of offerings in both the fall and spring season, the ski team also integrates off-season training into the co-curricular schedule to ensure its athletes enter the season with the strength and confidence to compete at the highest level. Northwood’s skiers can choose to participate in both team sports options and offerings in outdoor programs such as mountain biking, rock climbing, and others while maintaining a year-round fitness regime. Additionally, summer on-snow training camps, overseen by ski coaches, occur in Colorado, Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere.

Academic Approach: Because of Northwood School’s comprehensive curriculum and uniquely focused ski program, its students have opportunities to achieve unparalleled success both inside and outside of the classroom. By making adaptations to the traditional academic schedule in the winter, an asynchronous teaching model, a new TEAMs application and communication platform, academic support during training camps, and on the road, members of Northwood’s ski team maintain rigorous course loads while still training and competing at a high level.

Training Facilities: Northwood’s home mountain is Whiteface Mountain, the largest vertical drop in the East, ranked as the best ski area in the East by Ski Magazine on multiple occasions. The terrain includes Olympic runs that offer challenging training and racing terrain with a dedicated lift and trail for athletes.

Additional Information: Northwood has an ongoing partnership with the New York Ski Education Foundation (NYSEF) and the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA). NYSEF is a “Gold Certified Club” by the USSA, and together, Northwood School and NYSEF provide comprehensive snow sports programs. The coaching staff works with each team member to identify personal athletic goals and put together a training and competition plan geared toward achieving those goals. Skiers compete from the U16 state level into regional championships, all the way to U.S. Nationals and beyond. Northwood U16 ski-racers continue to capture multiple individual U.S. Eastern Championships titles, overall titles at that event, and appear on the podium at the U16 National Championships. U19 skiers continue to receive invitations to U.S. Ski Team training camps, following in the footsteps of former Northwood skiers. These include Andrew Weibrecht ’03 (USA), a two-time Olympic medalist & five-time top-5 World Cup finisher in 2016, Kevin Drury ’06 (CAN), 2020 SkiCross World Cup Champion, and many others racing at the collegiate level on the EISA, NCAA, USCSA, and the Canadian RSEQ UNI FIS circuits.
