DENVER, Colo. — The Alterra Mountain Company Community Foundation has appointed Robert Foley as its new Executive Director, bringing more than two decades of nonprofit leadership, philanthropy and behavioral health experience to the organization.
Foley will lead the Foundation as it continues to expand its mental health resources and programming across mountain communities. The public charity, originally founded and inspired by Alterra Mountain Company, focuses on improving access to mental health support, reducing stigma and providing assistance to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
Foley comes to the role with extensive experience working across rural, urban and underserved communities. Most recently, he worked with The Colorado Trust, where his work addressed housing, food access and mental and behavioral health.
He previously served as Senior Project Director at the CDC Foundation and as Chief Program Officer for the National Indian Health Board, where he worked on organizational strategy, program development and national partnerships supporting Tribal health, public health and behavioral health systems.
Earlier in his career, Foley served as President and CEO of the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center and worked in health prevention at the Denver STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and Colorado State University’s Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research.
“I am thrilled to join the Alterra Mountain Company Community Foundation and leverage my 20+ years of nonprofit work across diverse and geographically dispersed communities to further advance the Foundation’s mission,” Foley said.
Foley also brings a personal connection to the communities the Foundation serves as a lifelong mountain recreator.
“As a lifelong mountain recreator, I look forward to creating even more connections and collaborations across our mountain communities, as well as strengthening pathways, brokering resources, and finding impactful solutions so all community members can thrive,” he said.
Expanding Mental Health Support in Mountain Communities
The Alterra Mountain Company Community Foundation was initially established to provide financial assistance to mountain communities during times of need. Its work has since expanded significantly, with mental health becoming a central focus.
The Foundation now supports communities through grantmaking and direct programming, including Mountain Community Screenings, Specialized Psychotherapies, Behavioral Health Access, a Mental Health Toolkit and Emergency Relief and Hardship Assistance.
It is also preparing to launch a new Behavioral Health System Improvement Toolkit designed specifically for mountain communities.
The work addresses an important challenge facing many resort and mountain towns, where access to behavioral health services and other resources can be limited despite growing community needs.
Under Foley’s leadership, the Foundation plans to continue building partnerships and expanding access to resources across the mountain communities connected to Alterra Mountain Company and beyond.
