Best friends share the podium in Lenzerheide super G

As the sun rose over Switzerland this morning, the sky glistened a perfect shade of blue. The clear skies held throughout the race as did the solid snow conditions – a perfect mix of firm and grippy, the kind of snow racers dream about. It was a day made for super G.

Cornelia Huetter won the race with a time of 1:14.52, grabbing her first World Cup win ever – something that seemed inevitable given her consistent podium finishes in speed events this season.

“The last races were not so easy for me because my knee was not the best, but the last two days in training, it was a good feeling,” the Austrian said. “Today it was OK and it’s amazing. I don’t know what I should say because the whole season was great and now it’s the top and yeah, it’s unbelievable.”

Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter skied only a tenth of a second slower to finish in second place, handling the terrain in the course like a pro.

That’s also a very nice feeling.”

Huetter’s teammate, Tamara Tippler, held on through a hair-raising finish to round out the podium, 0.35 seconds off of the winning pace. In the finish area, Tippler said she was excited to share the podium with her “best friend” and roommate.

Current overall points leader and crowd favorite, Lara Gut, was 0.58 seconds off of the winning pace, skiing into fifth. She sits 19 points behind American Lindsey Vonn in the super G standings and will have to finish in 13th place or better at World Cup finals in St. Moritz next week in order to overtake Vonn.

Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg, who currently sits third in the overall World Cup standings, does not plan to start in tomorrow’s alpine combined, effectively conceding the big globe to Gut. Instead of racing on Sunday, Rebensburg will rest up for next week’s races to close out the season with strong results.

Larisa Yurkiw of Canada was the top North American on the day, finishing in 21st – two spots ahead of American Laurenne Ross. The only other member of the U.S. Ski Team, Stacey Cook, just missed the top 30, landing in 31st. Notably absent from the start list was Mikaela Shiffrin, who originally planned to race, but instead opted for giant slalom training before the final races of the season.

Also missing was American Alice Mckennis, who recently found out that she broke her elbow in the alpine combined in Andorra.

“After more x-rays early this week which showed how badly broken my elbow was I had Dr. Viola put it back together with a plate and 12 screws!,” she announced on her Facebook page. “Surgery went well, and I am recovering well.”

The action continues tomorrow from Lenzerheide with the alpine combined at 10 a.m. CET.
