Who is racing, when are they racing, and how to watch Saturday’s Aspen downhill.

Unfortunately, the weather caused the eventual cancelation of Friday’s Aspen downhill. Fortunately, USA’s Ryan Cochran Siegle was sitting in third at the halt of the race. However, thirty racers would have had to have started for the race to be valid and that threshold was never met.

This is the third time in history that an Aspen men’s World Cup downhill was canceled after it began. Twice US downhiller AJ Kitt was leading when the races ended and today it was Norwegian Adrian Smiseth Sejersted.

Notably, tomorrow will end a successful era of US men’s speed skiing. It will be the final regular season downhill of Stifel US Alpine Athlete Travis Ganong. He will retire after the World Cup finals in Soldeu Andora. Additionally, Recently retired US veteran Steven Nyman will make a ceremonial run down the slope at the end of the race.

Today only four of the North Americans started before the cancelation of the race. However, the forecasted weather should mean tomorrow will bring another opportunity for all of them to race on their home continent.

Currently one Canadian and three US athletes are inside the top 25 and would receive an invitation to the World Cup finals. However, one great or two good results could earn any of them a trip to Andora.

Current North American men’s World Cup downhill standings

Twelve North American men will start in tomorrow’s downhill. Five Canadian and seven US skiers will attack Ruthie’s Run/America’s Downhill.
